Multidisciplinary Analysis of Human Sexuality and Diversity
Learning Objectives
Critically analyze information from academic/professional sources.
Use electronic databases to find articles.
Practice reading professional writing and recognize valid research and understand the results.
Practice using good writing techniques to support a thesis.
Use multiple perspectives to look at a single issue of culture and gender.
Practice reflection and self-assessment on how research on a topic influences personal opinion.
General Instructions
Select one of the topics listed below and develop a paper that analyzes issues of human sexuality from multidisciplinary perspectives. Apply concepts from three distinctly different disciplines of human study to analyze the particular phenomenon, see listing below one from each column. Incorporate theoretical frameworks, theoretical constructs and other “explanations” that have been used by these disciplines to create a perspective that will provide a possible “explanation” for the issue. This should be the way the discipline approaches the topic, it should not be a listing of findings. For example do not give a historic account of the topic...
Because there are two sides to the topics below, all topics need to argue both sides of the topic – the ‘for’ and ‘against.’ The information used to build your paper must be backed by scholarly data and research.
While guidelines are provided below for your paper, getting an A will really be about not only responding to every question but coming up with more discussion points than the ones indicated below.
Temporary Protection Status
Clearly define the what the term ‘Temporary Protection Status’ means.
➢ What is Temporary Protection Status?
➢ Who and what countries does this does this currently apply to?
➢ What challenges have been brought against this status in recent years (last 3 years)?
➢ Why have the challenges been brought?
➢ What impact would removing ‘temporary protection status’ have or has had on the people who either currently benefit from this or have had it removed? Or their countries that would have to receive them back?
➢ Using one country that has this status,...
Giving a Ted Talk or Academic Lecture
YOUR TASKS:
Construct a text of a specific genre that represents your discipline or field (your future profession), or an area of special interest.
You have two options: Academic lecture or Ted Talk.
In either case, this text should emanate from a sense of interest, passion, fluency, and authority, as well as an understanding of what a Ted Talk or Academic Lecture actually is and does.
You must write-out the lecture/talk in paragraph form AND create a detailed outline of this lecture/talk.
You will deliver this 10 minute lecture or Ted Talk in front of class.
You can personalize your project, be somewhat creative; after all, “genre becomes a way of navigating social activity. As such, it is dynamic, because the conditions of social activity are always in flux. [As a result], recurrence involves variation” (Berkenkotter and Huckin).
However, despite its personal touch, the “text” you create must “do” whatever is typical of such a...

Columbia and UPA
Discussion Topic: The Lasting Influence of UPA Animation
Question : The UPA style is exemplified as being economical and stylized. Find a current animation that you feel owes its visual identify to the UPA Studio. Please support your findings with any embedded movie clips and stills.
**Instruction**: This an informal class discussion. Skim read the reading material attached and do a response, add link to the videos; can be found on youtube
Sample from other classmate :
I think a modern cartoon that showcases some elements of the UPA style is the TV show The Fairly Odd Parents. The show features backgrounds with the UPA characteristic uneven rectangles with exaggerated angles, and the limited use of color in the backgrounds. The character designs also have some similarities like extremely large sloping noses on some adult male characters and smaller rounded or pointed noses on child characters. The character’s hands are similar but only when completely open, it’s kind of hard to describe...
LITERARY THEORY: AN OVERVIEW
(adapted from The Norton Introduction to Literature, shorter 12th ed.)
EMPHASIS ON SOURCE-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BIOGRAPHICAL CRITICISM—(popular 1750s-1960s), emphasis on the artistic expression/agency of a work, the author is the ultimate authority, a look at how the author’s biographical information may have affected the work (as a whole or in part).
PSYCHOANALYTIC CRITICISM—emphasis on mental and emotional effects within literature such as dreamlike imagery, rarely focuses on the form of the text—they tend to focus on hidden meanings/agendas behind the author or a source behind the character.
EMPHASIS ON READER------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
READER-RESPONSE CRITICISM—“regard the work not as what is printed on the page but as what is experienced temporally through each act of reading”, “the reader effectively performs the text into existence the way a musician performs music from a score”, identifies reader’s expectations, how they are met/satisfied/interpreted, could possibly bring in political identities because of the potency of literature to shape and be shaped by human experiences.
HISTORICAL/IDEOLOGICAL CRITICISM----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MARXIST CRITICISM—(20th century-present, Karl Marx), “literary works...
Poetry Explication/Anthology
Write a 4 to 5-page essay where you justify including 3 poems in an anthology. For each poem, include a poetry explication that compares how 3 poems address the same or similar issues. For example, you might choose to examine how 3 poems speak about the same historical moment (i.e. the Vietnam War) or how 3 poems examine a particular social issue (i.e. hunger and poverty). Two of your poems must be ones that we’ve read for homework or in class; the other needs to at least be in your textbook. You must include a name for your anthology, explain your anthology’s theme, and explain what chapter of your anthology these three poems would be included.
What is an anthology?
An anthology is a collection of literary works by different authors.
What is explication?
Explication is the unraveling of a poem. You will explain the poem word by word, line by line, or stanza by stanza. In unfolding the poem, you should address...
