  • SOCIOLOGY 213 HW2: FIELD OBSERVATION PART II ASSIGNMENT

    $20.00

PURPOSE: The purpose of this two-step exercise is for you to conduct inductive and deductive research using qualitative methods.

NOTE: it is important that you conduct the observations as two distinct events during this class; ‘recalling’ past observations is not the same as purposefully observing your surroundings from a sociological perspective, and applying two different types of reasoning to one observation will not be ‘truthful’ or successful.

     GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

The purpose of this exercise if for you to observe ONE social setting to begin to detect patterns in human behavior – observance of norms and potentially behaviors that deviate from the norm.

For HW2: You will develop a research design with research problem, hypothesis and operational definitions for variables; then you will conduct another 1 hour of observations in the same social setting as in HW1.

HW2-FIELD OBSERVATION ASSIGNMENT PART 2 (DEDUCTIVE RESEARCH) INSTRUCTIONS:

For HW2: You will develop a research design with research problem, hypothesis and operational definitions for variables; then you will conduct another 1 hour of observations. NOTE: For additional information on hypotheses, operational definitions, and other research methodology concepts, see Week 5 Lesson>Assignments, Tests & Quizzes section for links to some methodology resources.

    • Based on your initial observations and written analyses completed for HW1, develop a specific research problem/question to be further investigated (i.e. the variation in behavior of males versus females when entering a store with a glass store front)
    • Identify the key variables you are going to be investigating, and develop an operational definition for each of them. (this should include at least two variables, but not more than four). Your operational definitions will help to provide parameters for how to record variations in your observations.
    • Write a hypothesis for what you expect to observe in your second round of observations.
    • Repeat observations. This should be done at the SAME social setting as in HW1 at approximately the same time of day (if you can do this one or two weeks later on the same day, it would be great!)
    • When you have returned from you observation, type up your notes. Review your notes for patterns in behavior, socio-demographic characteristics, etc. AND how they corresponded with your expectations/hypothesis
    • Describe observations using ‘thick description’ of the location (i.e. building you were in (what is the architecture like), descriptions of people there (in terms of socio-demographic characteristics: age, race/ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status), sounds, smells, temperature, time of day and week, etc);
    • Analyze your observations in terms of how they supported/did not support your hypothesis.
    • What is a possible sociological/theoretical explanation for the trends you observed? This is best done by using our textbook and other sources to provide credibility to your analyses. Analyze your observations using a minimum of 6 sociological concepts and two theories from the textbook.
    • Discuss the differences between your inductive observations and your deductive observations. How did the way you were observing change? How did what you observed change?
    • Briefly describe and compare your thoughts/feelings in the two steps. Did you prefer one approach to the other? Why/why not?

    http://putlocker.bz/watch-john-q-online-free-putlocker.html
    •    Read an article about in defense of managed care in the May 2002 issue of Managed Care that is available at managedcaremag.com: http://www.managedcaremag.com/archives/0205/0205.johnq.html.

    1. If your son had severe, life-threatening cardiomyopathy, as in this story, and your options were to a) let him die while having some “quality time” or b) get him a heart transplant, which would you choose?
    2. Does your (or your parents) insurance cover a heart transplant? You will need to look at the plans’ benefits and rules. You may need to consult with a health plan representative. Write down the name of your insurance, what kind of insurance it is (HMO, PPO, POS, etc.), whether it specifically covers heart transplants, how high the maximum single payout is, and how high your lifetime benefits are. Write down how you found out these things. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE, research an insurance program for a friend/family member, or find one on-line to research and report on.
      • Give your opinion of the Managed Care article’s points raised in questions 3 and 4 above.
      • What is a “cash account?”
    3. Given what you have learned about member services in this course, comment on the fact that John Q did not know about his policy switch from a PPO to an HMO. Was this John Q’s problem, an employer problem or a health plan problem? What should be done to improve this situation?
    4. In the ER, the hostages, hospital employees and doctors discuss John Q’s problem. They suggest that HMOs create incentives that might lead to a physician missing a problem when it could have been caught and treated. List four incentives common to HMO provider reimbursement or provider relations that might do this, and explain why each of the incentives you list could do this.
    5. Policy Opinion Question (no right or wrong answer). Should the working poor, such as John Q, be denied certain treatments available to those with better jobs and better health care or those “on welfare?”
  • Questionnaire – Option 2: Homeless men and health care service

    $5.00

The learning objective of this assignment is to practice designing a structured survey versus an unstructured interview. These are different. For guidance on structured survey questions, please see pages 189-193 and 196-200 of your text. For guidance on interview questions, please see pages 190-191 and 194-196 of your text.

There are two parts to this assignment. You must complete the first part in order to have access to the second part.

Prepare and submit your response (see topic below for more guidance).
Complete two peer reviews . The peer reviews will be automatically assigned to you as soon as the due date for submission has passed – so these should be completed between Thursday and Saturday. Again, if you do not complete the first part you will not have access to the peer review process. Unlike our other peer review assignments, you will NOT be resubmitting again for instructor review so do your BEST JOB the first time around.
    Topic

    Submission

This week you will be designing both a: 1) five question survey AND 2) five interview questions.

You have two options to complete this assignment.

Option 1: The first option is that you develop the survey versus interview questions around your research topic of interest (i.e., on the topic for which you completed your problem statement and literature review). Please prepare and submit:

Five questions and a response scale for each question that would be administered as a survey to your study participants.
Five open-ended interview questions. These would be administered during an interview or discussion with your study participants. Remember that these should not be framed as “yes” or “no” questions. If you do not know how to do this, please revisit last week and this week’s learning modules, as well as chapters 7 and 8 of your text.
    – OR –

Option 2: If you do not want to use your research topic of interest, you may use the following scenario instead to develop the survey versus interview questions. The topic is homeless men and health care services. More specifically, you are trying to gather information on how they access health care services; the barriers to accessing health care services; and the quality of the services they receive. Please prepare and submit:

Five questions and a response scale for each that would be administered as a survey to a homeless man.
Five open-ended interview questions. These would be administered during an interview or discussion with a homeless man. Remember that these should not be framed as “yes” or “no” questions. If you do not know how to do this, please revisit last week and this week’s learning modules, as well as chapters 7 and 8 of your text.

  • Report on making the facility a good place

    $40.00

    Background:

You are a new healthcare administrator having just graduated from UCF with a bachelor’s degree in HSA. Your first job is the director of a 250 bed skilled nursing facility located in Orlando, Fl. You are really excited about your first job as a healthcare administrator and show up early on your first day. When you arrive you find the facility in complete disarray, phones are ringing, patients call buttons are going unanswered, and trash cans are overflowing. You find very few of the night shift employees are still there, those employees still in the building appear to be napping on the job.

After you help answer the phones and direct clinical staff to assist patients, you finally make it into your office where you realize that the issues do not stop on the patient care floor! Bills are unpaid, accreditation requirements are unmet, and nine notices from the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) are lying unopened on the desk, and you find a resignation on the desk from your administrative assistant. It is obvious that you have just walked into a disaster area.

Just then your phone rings and on the other end of the line your boss, the corporate VP for Operations, she sounds very angry. She explains that she just got a report on your facility and you are over budget, your vacancy rates are up, your predecessor did not submit any input to the capital budget process which was due two weeks ago, several employees have complained about the facility and one even suggested that she is being sexually harassed by her supervisor, in a nut shell your facility is falling apart at the seams. You try to explain that you just got to the job but she doesn’t want to hear it, instead she wants to meet with you in two weeks to hear how you are going to fix this and what progress you have made in a two week’s time.

What are you going to do? Make sure that you include your immediate response (what you have done during the first and second week), your immediate plans short term plans, your intermediate plans, and your long term goals. Prepare the report that you will present to your boss that walks her through the steps you have already taken and that you will take in the short, intermediate and long run to bring this facility back to life. Be creative about your facility and the issues that you are confronting.

    Tips:

    • Use theories from the book and other sources as necessary
    • Cite using APA style:
    • List references in APA at the end
    • Make sure that you address all parts of the question and address all issues in depth, don’t skip over issues addressed above
    • Follow assignment guidelines!
    • Check all spelling & grammar (it sometimes help to read your presentation aloud)

I want you all to approach this case study assignment from a professional presentation view point.
By that I mean you should have your report in a format that is easy for your “new boss” to read/understand/and assess your potential for continuation in the job.
What I want to see is a power point presentation that lays out your initial reaction/observations/actions and then presents your goals and action steps (and metrics) for making the facility a good place to be a patient, to work and for making the facility profitable.

BE SURE TO READ GUIDANCE IN THE SYLLABUS CAREFULLY
You will need to develop a tactical plan and execution plan for the immediate response and a Strategic Plan to turn the organization around.  Think Product, process, metrics, and outcome.
Remember that I will grade this as if I were your new boss… I will be deciding if I am going to keep you in your position, and give you the resources and latitude to execute your plan (that will be an A for a great plan and great confidence or B for a good plan but one I have some concerns about), immediately fire you because I do not have any confidence you or your plan and do not believe you have shown that you have the managerial and leadership skills, knowledge, and planning ability to be successful (this will be a F), or send you help from my team (this is never a good thing, help from above is a statement that your supervisors don’t have faith in your plan or ability to execute it, but are not ready to just fire you and pick another leader), (this will result in a C for a plan I consider workable but needs more specifics to be successful and I will assign a more senior leader to be your consultant in the execution,  or D for a plan that is marginal but could work, but I think the corporation will be better served with someone else on site, overseeing the tactical actions and strategic planning and execution to be successful).    The grades I will assign are as follows:  200 points for an A, 170 points for a B, 150 points for a C, 125 points for a D, and 100 points or less for an F.

This assignment is worth 20% of your grade, so you should plan to invest 12 to 20 hours in the process of researching, developing, presenting and completing the assignment.
The assignment is also a dry run for something that is likely to happen to you in the first two years of your employment as a healthcare manager.  Nearly every new manager is faced with taking over from a failing manager.  You should see this as a real opportunity, not a threat.  On a personal note, I always found that going in behind a manager who had failed or taking over a troubled organization was a great position and an outstanding career opportunity.  There is only one way to go and even small improvements in the short run are likely to make you a hero in the eyes of your leaders.

    Assignment Guidelines:
I want to see is a power point presentation
Cover page that includes name, class and topic of presentation.
Final page with credits, cite appropriately and list references
Typed in Times New Roman with a minimum of 12 point font, you may use bold but no italic.  Larger fonts are fine … but nothing smaller than 12 for any part of the slides.
No animation or double click formats, let the slide present in one click only.
Professional looking backgrounds, no dark colors or busy backgrounds.  Don’t need pictures that add nothing to the message.  This is a professional presentation to your boss.  Don’t let him or her think you are not very serious about your presentation.  Your job and ultimately your career depend on it.
This should be an impressive and informative presentation that will gain you the trust and confidence of your new boss that you have the planning, personnel, financial, budgeting, leadership and managerial skills to be successful and progress in the organization.
There is no page limit but follow the rule, long enough to cover the subject and short enough to still be interesting… in short, tell me what time it is, don’t tell me how to build a watch.
