  • Discuss your own “working” definition of healthcare ethics

    $10.00

Discuss your own “working” definition of healthcare ethics. You may need to refer back to previously covered chapters, in addition to consulting Chapters 13 and 14. Think about the following: What morals/values are important to you? What are your moral bottom lines (i.e. how far is too far; what would you quit your job over, etc.)? What kind of healthcare employee (clinical or managerial) do you want to be?

  • Reflection: Reducing errors and health care quality improvement

    $5.00

For this discussion assignment, think back to your initial discussion.  You stated what you felt the impact of quality improvement had on healthcare and your experiences with it.  Now that you have finished the content of the course, how have your opinions changed or have they stayed the same?  How do you feel the concepts and theories you learned in this course will assist you in your future career?

  • “Interdisciplinary” ethics committee – Jimmy is an 11-year old boy who suffers from lymphoma Case Study

    $10.00

Think like an “interdisciplinary” ethics committee.  Chapter 10 contains information on Ethics Committees.

Review the case below and adopt 2-3 roles (below) and develop a response to this case.  The perspective of each role you choose may look different.  For example, a CEO will respond differently than a physician than will a nurse.

    Case for review:

Jimmy is an 11-year old boy who suffers from lymphoma.  His oncologist has indicated that without chemotherapy, he is likely to die within 6 months.  She has also indicated that in most cases, chemotherapy provides an effective cure in only 20 percent of cases like Jimmy’s; in most cases, chemotherapy produces at best an additional 3-6 month extension of life.

Jimmy is also compromised by an incurable neurological disease.  This disease will eventually make it impossible for him to walk, talk or use his hands effectively.  Already, he speech is slurred and he cannot hold a pencil.  Even without lymphoma, the prognosis– because of the neurological disease– is death by the age of 18.

Jimmy has been raised in a strong religious environment, and his belief in God has been an important comforting factor to him.  After having the facts fully explained to him, he has accepted his situation and the inevitability of his death at a young age.  He says he does not want the chemotherapy and that he is ready to “go to God.”  His parents, however, cannot reconcile themselves to losing Jimmy.  They want to override his decision/proceed with chemotherapy.

Adopt 2-3 of these roles and develop a response to the case.  Include specific perspectives for each role you adopt:

    – Administrator/CEO
    – Physician
    – Nurse
    – Oncologist
    – Social Worker
    – Psychologist
    – Clergy/Chaplain
    – Community member
    – Lawyer
    – Ethicist
    – Health Services Administration/Health Professions Undergraduate Student

  • Facility disaster management plan: You are a new health services administrator at Good-Patient Hospital

    $5.00

Topic: You are a new health services administrator at Good-Patient Hospital located on the east coast of Florida. Upon reviewing different aspects of the facility, you realize that there is no facility disaster management plan in place. You are specifically worried about hurricanes but recognize that there may be other types of disasters that need attention. Good sources to look is publications from the JCAHO and the Florida Dept of Health.

Original Post You have three options available to you to develop the plan. These include:

    1. assign the task to one of the junior health services administrators within the facility;
    2. form a planning committee of employees to develop the plan; or
    3. bring in an experience contractor to create the plan.

    In your original post discuss:

    1. Which of these options, or combination of options, do you think will help you create the best plan possible? and
    2. What types of organizations outside your facility might be important partners to include in the plan because they would be key in responding to a disaster?
  • Healthcare Case Study Prompts

    $15.00

REMEMBER CHOOSE ONLY ONE CASE STUDY!!!
Both Case Study Prompts are Below:

Case Study Question #1:  Following the assignment protocols -The paper should be no less than 2 double-spaced pages and no longer than 3 in length. List your references on a separate page, have 1” margins and cite your sources in APA style. Use a 12-point font (Times New Roman, or Arial), and not in bold font.

Research and answer the question relating to the following case study/scenario:

Case Study #1 Scenario: You have been hired as a new chief executive officer (CEO) for a 320-bed acute care hospital with outpatient centers. The previous CEO resigned under questionable circumstances, and according to the governing board (GB) members, the facility suffers from low employee morale and several departmental managers have recently quit. The GB members have further explained that the previous CEO was an autocrat who often publicly berated employees. This, in turn, caused employees’ to mistrust hospital administration, which spilled over into the provision of poor healthcare services.  Some GB members told how the situation has gotten so bad that they had overheard several people in the community recommending residents obtain health services from a competitor’s hospital 30 miles away and, in fact, visits to the facility’s outpatient centers has been steadily decreasing. To correct this situation, the GB members want you to promote a culture of continuous quality improvement and customer service within the institution in order to return public trust, the good will and high morale of the employees, and regain respect from residents in the community.

To begin this task, you realize that you must educate your employees in the philosophy of quality improvement, and you believe it is best to begin by selecting a particular quality pioneer to begin your initiative.

    Answer the following question:

Of the quality pioneers you have studied (e.g., Deming, Juran, Crosby, Joiner, Ishikawa), and given the fact that you want to promote an environment and culture of change based on CQI principles, select one pioneer to model or frame your institutional initiative. Giving specifics examples, explain why you chose this particular pioneer to teach the CQI philosophy to your organization. Feel free to use additional resources outside of the assigned reading to research the topic, but please cite your sources using APA style.

    —— OR———

Case Study Question #2:  Following the assignment protocols -The paper should be no less than 2 double-spaced pages and no longer than 3 in length. List your references on a separate page, have 1” margins and cite your sources in APA style. Use a 12-point font (Times New Roman, or Arial), and not in bold font.

Research and answer the question relating to the following case study/scenario:

Case Study #2 Scenario: You are the director of the Health Information Services (HIS) department of a 220-bed acute care hospital, and it has been brought to your attention that in many instances nurses have not been entering data into the hospital’s A-D-T (admissions, discharges, transfers) computer system appropriately. At patient units, nurses are responsible for entering data to indicate that a patient has been transferred (to another floor/unit within the hospital) or discharged to home or other facility (e.g., long-term care, rehab).  Specifically, nurses have forgotten to enter data when patients transfer from one unit to another within the facility (e.g., patient transfers from ICU to 3-West). This computer entry error causes several other problems/complaints to occur that include:

Patients have an incorrect location in the computer system, and therefore, cannot be located by family and visitors, as well as employees providing ancillary services (e.g., therapists, lab technicians).
The Dietary Department delivers meals to the wrong floor/unit.  By the time the patient is correctly located, the meal is received cold.
The Pharmacy Department routes medicines to the wrong patient floor/unit.
The Transcription Department sends reports (dictated by the physicians and transcribed by the department) to the wrong floor/unit.
An accounting error occurs, in which the patient is incorrectly charged for days in the wrong unit (e.g., charged for ICU versus 3-West)
Departmental activity (relating to the budget) reports are compromised, which results in departments being incorrectly credited or not credited for work and services provided.
As this has resulted in numerous complaints and poor service outcomes, the hospital’s CEO is quite concerned and has asked you to chair a CQI project team to address this problem.  You have collected the following data for the month of June:

Nursing Unit    Total Patient Transfers for June    Total Transfer Errors
    ICU    35    3
    PCU    30    4
    OBS    20    1
    3-West    55    10
    2-West    49    7
    1-West    47    5
    3-East    35    4
    2-East (Peds)    23    2
    1-East (OB)    25    1

    Answer the following questions:

As the CQI project chair, you have decided to use the PDSA method to direct your QI initiative; however, describe what team members you will enroll to assist you in this project, and explain why you have chosen these particular individuals.
Using the data above, describe at least two CQI tools that will you use to present your data and highlight the issues at your first team meeting in order for your team members to understand the extent and focus of the problem?
