The essay is to be a scholarly, well-researched descriptive and comparative analysis of the leadership qualities and achievements of a specific well-known leader to be chosen by you. The leader may be chosen from any of the three (public, private or not for profit) sectors. It is important to remember that the essay is NOT a simple report on the life of the leader, but a critical research based reflection, utilizing the readings and learnings in our class, on the question of the relevance and analysis of character, achievements and legacy of the leader you have chosen. • Survey Of Art History ASSIGNMENT: TERM PAPER

Survey Of Art History ASSIGNMENT: TERM PAPER

Choose one artwork from the current exhibition from the Schelfhaudt Gallery and write a two page term paper, http://www.schelfhaudtgallery.com/ Or look for the artistes web-site.

THREE FOOTNOTES FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES!! WEB SITE, BOOK, MAGAZINE ARTICLE,

FILM. I will not accept term papers through e-mail, if need be, turn your paper into the office and into my mailbox.

Use the voburalry we’ve been using and learning all semester: line, form, palette. Try to convince me that you’re an art critic. Try asking yourself some of the following questions: What colors are used in the artwork? Do the colors influence the effect the piece has on the viewer? How big is the work? Does that require the viewer to be close to observe/understand the work? What medium is the work in? How does that influence the total affect of the piece? Where is the work located? Was the work intended for many people to see or not? How do you feel when you look at the piece? What do you think the intentions of the artist were? Do you think the artist was successful? Is the effect of the artwork on the viewer different now than when it was originally done? Etc.

How is this artwork typical or untypical of the culture in which it was produced? Does it have a social or religious function? What is its historical role? Is it reflective of that particular historical period? Is it somehow different or like the artwork that came before and after it? To answer some of these types of questions, you will need to gather general historical and cultural information from written sources, but then also discuss points specific to that piece of artwork, like in visual analysis. Ask the staff at the Library to help you identify books on your topic if you are having trouble. Some valuable information can be found on the web, But first try to make sure that you are consulting a reliable site.

Sample footnote:? Some art historians have long held that Picasso was among the first major artists to switch from traditional artists? paint to house paint.?

  • Art History: Assume you have been given the ability to travel back in time

    $20.00

Assume you have been given the ability to travel back in time, and you are about to set off on a trip to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The purpose of your trip is to give you the opportunity to visit artists in their studios and to view firsthand the creation of some specific types of paintings or sculpture.

Since the length of time you can spend on this journey is limited, you must decide beforehand what styles you are most interested in. The job you will have is to collect information concerning four (4) different styles—one from each time period listed below—as represented by two artists from each. You may choose from the following:

    The eighteenth century

    • Rococo
    • Romantic (painting or sculpture)
    • Neoclassical
    The nineteenth century

    • Naturalistic or realistic style in either Europe or North America
    • Impressionistic
    • Post-impressionistic
    First half of the 20th century (1900 – 1954)

    • Cubism
    • Fauvism
    • Expressionism
    • Surrealism
Second half of the 20th century/21st century (1945 to present)

    • Abstract Expressionism
    • Minimalism
    • Pop Art
    • Digital Art
    • Post-Modernism

Before you set out, you should have decided on the four styles that interest you, have determined specific artists you wish to visit, and come up with questions for which you wish to find answers. When you return, you will need to prepare a report that includes the following for each of the four styles you chose, as represented by two artists from each style:

    Name of the artist

Title of the work of art

Date of the work of art

Medium or materials used to create the work of art

Then in 2–4 paragraphs, tell us:

    • The style of the work
    • Reasons for the style to have gained popularity
    • Specific features of the style
    • 1-2 reasons why the work of art is important to the history of art

Your report should conclude with an explanation about which style you find most interesting.
